Destinational Knowledge
This is something we have... and we want to share it with our clients. As you will discover our staff have been to over 100 countries around the world. Our reputation has widened and strengthened, since we began in 1972, with referrals from past clients. We can prepare you for your arrival in a new destination with our own personal experience, videos, pre-departure booklets as well as reading lists.
AFRICA ASIA SOUTH AMERICA... These names conjure up many images... for everyone they are different.
It can be daunting to arrive in Delhi or Cairo or La Paz. The tour companies we deal with are based all over the world and therefore the group members are comprised of people from many different nationalities, ranging in age from 18 to 80. Over half of our clientele travel on their own so many of our tour companies do not charge single supplements. Add these factors to an experienced tour leader who will be able to share with you an inner knowledge of the society and culture you are exploring and we call it a dream come true.
We Can Help!
Our expertise will help alleviate your pre-trip jitters in regards to visa applications, vaccinations, airport taxis, local currencies, airfare routings and prices. Over 30 years in business in the competitive travel industry has sharpened our pencils and we find that in conjunction with our offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto our buying power has no equal. We negotiate directly with the airlines for fares to where you want to go.
Our personable staff and convenient locations will aid in making your "dream adventure" hassle free. Please take a moment and get to know our staff, or give us a call, e-mail us, or drop by for a visit.
To quote one of our tour companies, our "sense of adventure - or wonder, as some prefer to call it - is not something that died with Marco Polo". So come along with us through our website and explore the idea of adventure travel.

Anne Fairlie - Senior Travel Consultant and Manager for Trek Escapes in Toronto - Over the last 25 years I have been able to fulfill many of my travel dreams. Over 110 countries and I still find it impossible to be anonymous. To counter-balance the awkwardness of being a "ferengi", I have learned to get right into the middle of the culture and seep up the atmosphere. I venture into the market with my camera, chose a spot, sit and listen to the chatter, try to capture these ordinary moments between local shoppers. I have also been found surrounded by a horse, 2 dozen goats and 6 young boys trying to sell me their woolen hats.
I remember a visit to a small unmarked pagoda about 40' by 40' by 15' with no electricity. I bought a candle to take inside. There was no noise ... just half a dozen of us jaw-slacked and in awe of the hundreds of images painted 700 years ago on the walls and ceiling. I stumbled back out into the sunshine, jumped onto the back of my donkey cart, closed my eyes, and concentrated on the clop clop of the donkey's hooves ... We call them ìadventuresî but your exploits may be physical; they may be emotional escapades; you might be intellectually challenged; or you may share some belly-aching good times! In my diary from Sudan I wrote "the very moment you touch down at the airport you must set your clock back 30 years". I think you have to suspend your expectations. Accept the 'time' warp for 2 weeks and let all your senses absorb the strangeness. The rewards are immeasurable and, if you are lucky, you will experience true revealing moments and not just about others, possibly yourself as well. So come along now. |

Geordie McDonald - Senior Travel Consultant Trek Escapes Vancouver ñ Geordie has been working in the travel industry for over 12 years and worked with adventure travel from the beginning. He's worked in Edmonton, Toronto, Auckland, and is now based in Vancouver.
His travels started when he spent a year of high school studying in Germany. After high school and university he volunteered with Canada World Youth and spent time living with families in both BC and in the Darjeeling region of northern India. The experience in India truly awoke a passion for travel in him; there is no better place to learn about yourself and learn an appreciation of other people and cultures than India. It opened the world up to him. Since then he's been able to visit India a second time, travelling there independently before heading to South-East Asia. In several trips to Asia he's traveled through Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia & Borneo, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The trips have been a combination of independent travel as well as with some of Trek's great adventure operators. Also in Asia he's had the opportunity to travel in China, Taiwan and Japan. When pressed he would call Asia and the Middle East his favorite destinations. The Middle East is likely the most inspiring place to travel for Geordie. He also has been to Israel, Lebanon as well as Syria and Jordan which he says are absolutely amazing. The current popularity for travel to the Middle East is well earned and is a true testament to the incredible sights, scenery and wonderfully friendly people. In Africa he's travelled to Morocco, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Zambia. His next trip is to Kenya and Tanzania on Trek's very popular Kiboko Safari with a Zanzibar stopover afterwards! Geordie travelled, lived and worked in the South Pacific on two trips to New Zealand. New Zealand is a must see with such a great variety of things to see and do for all types of adventures. He has been to Fiji and Hawaii going back and forth to New Zealand.
In Central America his experiences include visits to Belize, Guatemala as well as Cuba. Cuba is a must see destination and the sooner you go the better. His advise is - get away from the beaches and see the country! A few of his more recent trips have been to the Canadian Arctic & Greenland on one of Trek's expedition ships, Bali & Lombok with a backpack on his back and Turkey with Imaginative Traveller. This past year he's been able to get to Japan in April for the cherry blossoms and South Africa and Namibia in September for a great accommodated safari. Check out his travel stories about these trips at trekescapes.com. Miyako Mori - Travel Consultant Trek Escapes Vancouver - Miyako was born in Japan and her first international trip was at the age of 13 when she headed to Minnesota as an exchange student. In 1994, Miyako relocated to Winnipeg, Canada with only two bags and a desire to experience the real Canada.

She has recently returned from five months of backpacking through Jordan, Egypt, India, Nepal, Pakistan, China, Japan, London, Germany and Czech. Her favorite experiences of this particular trip were riding on top of the bus along the Karakoram highway, glacier hiking in Pakistan and trekking for a month in Nepal. Miyako always meets a number of great people on her trips and makes freindships that last a lifetime. This last trip she met one of her 'little brothers' that she had met nine years ago on a trek in Annapurna. It was a great surprise as she had lost contact with him years ago. Miyako has traveled to Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands, Peru (and of course, the Inca trail!!), Kenya, Tanzania including Zanzibar Island, most of Western Europe, Finland and the United States. Miyako enjoys adventure travel because it isn't always easy, she loves mingling with locals and other travelers and she enjoys observing other cultures. Depending on how you want to classify her favorite places, Miyako's list reads: Nepal and Jordan for the people // Nepal and Pakistan for the beautiful mountains // All Latino countries and Africa for music // Peru and Egypt for ancient ruins // India and Thailand for best food // Zanzibar Island for favorite beach // Japan for their temples and Vancouver for sunsets Next destinations on Miyako's "adventure list" will be Patagonia, trekking in Baltistan, Pakistan to see K2, Mt. Kailash-Tibet, Central Asia, Ethiopia, and Australia. Miyako likes to talk about the countries she has visited and the trips she has experienced. Laura Derksen - Sales Agent Trek Holidays - Laura's life and travel experiences have led her to join the exciting world of Adventure Travel at Trek in May of 2008. Her world perspective was first broadened at the age of 8 when her family moved to Lahore, Pakistan for ten months. An extended trip on the way back from Pakistan took her through India, Thailand, and Hong Kong. A few years later her family uprooted from Canada once more and moved to Tamale Ghana, this time for two years. Living in such foreign cultures at a young age undoubtably made an impression on her as the discovery of new places is one of the things she now most enjoys!
Outside of her childhood experiences overseas, Laura also spent three months improving her German in Hamburg on a German Exchange program in high school. The spring of 2007 saw her return to Europe for a 4 month backpacking trip which was a long term dream realized for her! Besides visiting family in Germany and getting to know her own roots, she went skiing in the Austrian Alps, explored the historic cities of Italy, visited the eastern countries of Poland and Czech Republic, hiked the magnificent Norwegian fjords, went canyoning and parasailing in the Julian Alps of Slovenia and after all that relaxed on the clear blue Adriatic coast of Croatia! Laura's first adventure as a member of the Trek team took her to the diverse country of Peru in Sept/Oct 2009. While spending three weeks in this popular South American nation, Laura experienced life at high altitude in La Paz, spent the night with Quechua speaking locals on Amantani Island on Lake Titicaca, hiked the challenging Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, tasted guinea pig in Cuzco, went sand boarding on the dunes at Huacachina and visited the many fascinating sites and places in between! |
